Jacqueline Cardinal, Laurent Lapierre

Jacqueline Cardinal is Coordinator, Centre for Case Studies, HEC Montréal, Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and Research Associate, Pierre Péladeau Chair of Leadership, HEC Montréal. She holds a master of arts degree from Harvard University and a diploma in administrative sciences from HEC Montréal. She has conducted several case studies, mainly on the management of cultural organizations.
Laurent Lapierre holds the Pierre Péladeau Chair of Leadership at HEC Montréal. He teaches courses on management of arts enterprises and cultural industries. His research interests include leadership and the influence of managers’ personalities on their management style and the role of management behaviour in an organization’s performance. He has served as editor of the journal Gestion : Revue internationale de gestion and is coauthor of the three-volume Imaginaire et leadership.

ABSTRACT 
This case study centres on Jacques Matte, who, along with two colleagues and friends, Louis Dallaire and Guy Parent, has managed to sustain a highly successful international film festival in the region of Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Quebec, Canada. For one week each fall, the pace of life in the city of Rouyn-Noranda and throughout this remote region northwest of Montreal reaches a fever pitch. The author outlines the path taken by this team of entrepreneurs, identifying the players who have contributed to the success of the festival and the factors that account for the effectiveness of the trio’s joint leadership.

Cette histoire de cas relate l’expérience exceptionnelle de Jacques Matte qui, en collaboration avec deux collègues et amis, Louis Dallaire et Guy Parent, a réussi à implanter et à faire vivre un festival du cinéma international en Abitibi-Témiscamingue. Tout Rouyn-Noranda et cette région éloignée, au nord-ouest de Montréal, vivent intensément pendant une semaine à l’heure de ce festival d’automne. L’article fait revivre le cheminement de cette équipe d’entrepreneurs et présente les acteurs qui ont conduit au succès, ainsi que les facteurs de la réussite de ce leadership à plusieurs.

En este relato de caso se describe la experiencia excepcional de Jacques Matte, quien junto con sus dos colegas y amigos, Louis Dallaire y Guy Parent, lograron implantar y hacer florecer un festival de cine internacional en Abitibi-Témiscamingue. Toda la ciudad de Rouyn-Noranda y toda esta región apartada del noroeste de Montreal vive de manera intensa la semana que dura este festival otoñal. El relato hace revivir todo el recorrido de este equipo de emprendedores, protagonistas del éxito, y describe los factores que explican los logros de este liderazgo colectivo.
