This Spring 2019 issue includes two innovating articles on the management of human resources, often the most important item in the budget of an arts organization, two contributions on museum marketing, one on performance indicators, and a Company Profile of the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing.
The first article is by Sophie Hennekam, Dawn Bennett, Sally Macarthur and Talisha Goh. It examines the careers of women composers; based on the results of an international survey of 225 women composers, this piece sheds light on the nature of their career trajectories and suggests ways to reduce gender inequality in the music industry.
The second contribution, by Daniel Lotufo Maudonnet, Thomaz Wood Jr. and Pedro F. Bendassolli, presents the results of a qualitative study of career orientation strategies among Brazilian musicians; considering technological and institutional changes, the authors revisit the theory of boundaryless careers to add a fourth competency: know-when.
The third article, contributed by Tanja Komarac, Durdana Ozretic-Dosen and Vatroslav Skare, pertains to museum shops; based on a study of Croatian museums, the article suggests means to develop the visitor experience and to enhance the sustainability of museums.
The fourth article in this issue also deals with museum marketing, by examining the labels that accompany art works; Roger Bennett proposes two scales for measuring label quality and visitors’ thirst for knowledge.
The fifth contribution relates to performance indicators used by the French government in National Drama Centres. Simon Alcouffe, Pascale Amans, Isabelle Assassi and Fabienne Oriot look at how these are implemented in a specific drama centre and how they could be improved.
Finally, this issue’s Company Profile, prepared by Lin Yi, François Colbert and Luo Huihui, provides a detailed portrait of the achievements of Chen Ping, Director of the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing. The article demonstrates how the pursuit of artistic excellence and sound management have contributed to the success of this cultural centre, whose brand has become a reflection of China’s values.
